It is a constant challenge to find craftsmanship and educational value in today's toy industry. The vast majority of toys today fall into the plastic, disposable realm.
I get the sense that my child's imagination is being sucked right out of his head upon contact with those soulless petrochemical products.
However, I recently stumbled upon Automoblox. These super-cool toys are a combination car and building block. Real wood too! There are several models to choose from and they are all interchangable.
It's German engineering and quality for the pre-school set. No batteries required.
Available at Automoblox.

Thanks for the tip!
I agree about the newer toys, although my house is full of plenty of them. A friend gave me carved wooden toys for my shower. So simple and fun. But sometimes they get lost amid the clutter of plastic and hot wheels!

The real tragedy of it is that, side by side, my kid at least, wants the battery powered thing that goes bling over just about anything else. *sighs.
But this is quite the car, no doubt.

We've got our share of the plastic goods in our home. Family and friends have seen to that!
I'm trying desperately to find alternatives that compete with the "Wow" factor of the shiny, noisy stuff, and it is surprisingly hard.
